Estate Reserve

Sandalford Wines owns one of the largest and oldest vineyards in Margaret River. This low-yielding, dry-grown vineyard in the prestigious Wilyabrup sub-region of Margaret River provides virtually all the fruit for the Sandalford Estate Reserve range. Sandalford spares no expense at any stage of their production to ensure each wine is a benchmark in its own right. Both the white and red wines use only the very best new French and American Oak barriques (barrels traditionally used in Bordeaux, holding 225 litres) as style dictates. The white wines are made using only the very best free-run juice from each individual parcel of fruit. These quality standards are worth the effort, as exemplified by frequent awards. The Shiraz and the Cabernet Sauvignon have recently taken out trophies at wine shows as the best of their style.

Margaret River has once again been favoured with ideal ripening conditions for the 2015 vintage. Over 1000mL of winter rain, meant there was a solid level of sub-soil moisture for the vines. Mild summer conditions prevailed with cool nights and an almost constant breeze producing grapes which held their natural acid balance and had exceptional flavour development at lower sugar levels. Again, all fruit was disease free, with all varieties coming off at perfect ripeness.

2015 Sandalford Estate Reserve Shiraz

The 2015 vintage in Margaret River started with an unusually warm winter and plenty of rainfall, followed by mild and windy conditions in November, resulting in a prolonged flowering period. This changed in the second half of December to ideal ripening weather, dry and sunny without any extreme heat events and stayed consistent through to the end of February. March saw the start of cooler and wetter conditions, which slowed the ripening of our red varieties. This extended ripening period definitely tested our patience, but has resulted in red wines with greater flavour complexity and velvety soft tannins.

2016 Sandalford Estate Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon

The mild spring conditions merged into a warm and dry start to summer, with the vines on track slightly earlier than normal. These conditions were interrupted in mid-January 16, with 70mm of rain falling in the vineyard due to a tropical rain event. With this moisture came the challenge of increased fungal pressure on the fruit - 2 weeks out from the white harvest (leading to a very stressed Viticulturalist and Winemaker). For the reds, it gave them a much appreciated drink in the lead up to harvest in late March - early April. Despite this challenge, all fruit harvested are of exceptional quality, showing intense varietal characters.

2017 Sandalford Estate Reserve Verdelho

From the summer rainfall & river flooding in the Swan Valley, to the threat of not ripening any of the red grapes in Margaret River, the 2017 vintage will be remembered as one of the most nerve-racking and anxious seasons. It certainly beats all of the last 10 vintages I've seen at Sandalford. Overall, the whole growing season, from Spring through to Summer / Autumn was much cooler than average. There were no heat extremes this year. This delayed the ripening of all varieties by at least 3 -4 weeks than normal. For the whites, the wines have excellent flavour concentration and structure and were harvested with a good natural acid and sugar balance.
